The 20-Pounder Club

I am so proud of Renee for putting in the work before we travelled down to Brazil for a week long fishing trip aboard the @riomarieflyfish. I had heard from several friends that it’s a “1000-casts-a-day” kinda experience, but had hoped we would get a chance at some sight fishing. That’s when I had the idea to build an RC peacock bass. Renee and I took turns practicing casting to the RCPB (when we weren’t laughing at the thing) while the other one would drive it. Renee’s cast improved substantially.
Fast-forward to the Amazon jungle… Renee’s 20 pound fish wasn’t exactly a blind cast, but it wasn’t exactly a sight cast either. @rafaelnm had spotted several tiny bubbles on the surface - indicative of two mature bass taking their fry on a swim. I cast one shot over and stripped through the bubbles without a strike, then Renee made a beautiful cast beyond the bubbles, stripped it back and luckily hooked into the big male!
One cool thing about this trip is the amount of information recorded on each Asu caught. Lengths and weights are recorded, and the fish is tagged if not already. This fish had been previously tagged.
That night, Rafa asked to see the video I had recorded of him and a native guide taking the measurements. He wanted to verify what he had written down. To everyone’s surprise, this massive fish had been caught by Rafa in 2022. Pretty freaking cool coincidence!
It was meant to be.
I wonder who will catch it next...
